Goal Setting & Getting

What Are Your Goals if Any?

It’s true that many people make goals knowing that it’ll be hard to keep.  Although, studies show that while 52% of participants in a resolution study confident of success with their goals, only 12% actually achieved their goals, many still engage in personal-growth or self-improvement meaningful commitment.  After all there is always room for improvement.  Any simple healthy lifestyle adjustment is usually advantageous.

Are you one of the 52% who have trouble keeping your goals?  Did you make your goals that you just know you won’t be able to keep?  Did you aim to change things in your life that are just too much to handle?  What are your goals if you made any?

Just in case you are considering setting some goals and habit changes, here are just four simple steps:

(1)        Clearly state what your really want in the following areas

  • Improve health: weight maintenance; exercise consistently; eat less and healthier; drink less alcohol; quit smoking, …
  • Improve finances: get out of debt; make more money; save and/or invest some money, …
  • Improve career: get a better job; get organized and become and entrepreneur; start a business, …
  • Improve education: improve grades; get a better education; learn something new each day, …
  • Improve self: be more organized; reduce stress; be less grumpy; smile more; manage time; be more independent; more self-reliant, …
  • Improve relationships: family, work, friends, serve and offer help to others
  • Improve personal development: spirituality; areas within your interests; do what you love to do each day, …

As you can see, setting goals might be relatively easy, but keeping them, not so much.  Here are some simple tips that will help you keep focused and having a fabulous time.

 (2)        Positive Affirmation

Ø       Trust the power of your words.   State your affirmations in:  First person; Present tense, and in the end result - as you already reached your goals.  Choose the thoughts you will focus on.  As you notice negative thought telling you “it’s too hard,” gently redirect them, as many times as needed, to the positive track of “I can do this.”  Simply declaring that you can do things differently can make a real difference in your lives.

Ø       Be modest in your aspirations.  Make your goals attainable and slowly, persistently pursue them.  When you want to do too much, you end up with nothing at all.

Ø       Focus - Focus – Focus.  Repetition is the key.  Each day repeat your goals and affirmations.  Write them down and make them visible to be reminded as often as possible.

(3)        Take Action:

Ø       How do you want to achieve your goals.  Open yourself to the possibility of a new reality. Re-establish your priorities.  Broaden your perspective. Stay organized.  Sign up for a class or a course, get a gym membership or set up time and place for your daily home work-out routine, get up and move, make healthy choices…

Ø       Be mindful of the habit changes.  Always be mindful about your habit adjustments in your daily life.  Keep a journal - describing your “self-talk,” your feelings, your joy, any accomplishments.  Be mindful in making better and healthy choices about what, why, where and how much you eat and drink.  Focus on the present moment.  As you become more moment-to-moment aware of your body, breaths, emotions, and thoughts, that awareness will become an essential part of your daily life.  You'll be able to better identify and address what’s wrong and resolve it in the moment.

Ø       Reach out, get support.  Surround yourself with positive people.  Build a core support circle to help.  When it comes to personal growth or self-improvement, there are heights which you can attain only with the support of like-minded friends who encourage you to keep going even when you want to give up.  Remember – “God helps those who help themselves”

(4)        Celebrate:

Ø       Reward yourself for good behavior.  Take yourself out to dinner, get some new clothes, treat yourself no matter how small the victory.  It will help you stay focused and committed over time.

NOTE:  A study in 2007 by Richard Wisemen from the University of Bristol showed that 78% of those who set New Year resolutions fail, and those who succeed have 5 traits in common.  Men achieved their goal 22% more often when they engaged in goal setting, (a system where small measurable goals are being set; such as, a pound a week, instead of saying "lose weight"), while women succeeded 10% more when they made their goals public and got support from their friends.

 FOOD FOR THOUGHT:

The reason most people never reach their goals is that they don’t define them, or ever seriously consider them as believable or achievable. Winners can tell you where they are going, what they plan to do along the way, and who will be sharing the adventure with them.
~Denis Watley

You can’t hit a home run unless you step up to the plate. You can’t catch a fish unless you put your line in the water. You can’t reach your goals if you don’t try.
~Kathy Seligman

Goals are dreams with deadlines.
~Diana Scharf Hunt

Man is a goal seeking animal. His life only has meaning if he is reaching out and striving for his goals.
~Aristotle
BC 384-322 Greek Philosopher

First, have a definite, clear practical ideal; a goal, an objective. Second, have the necessary means to achieve your ends; wisdom, money, materials, and methods. Third, adjust all your means to that end.
~Aristotle
BC 384-322 Greek Philosopher

The world makes way for the man who knows where he is going.
~Ralph Waldo Emereson

Our plans miscarry because they have no aim. When a man does not know what harbor he is making for, no wind is the right wind.
~Seneca

Without goals, and plans to reach them, you are like a ship that has set sail with no destination.
~Fitzhugh Dodson

A soul without a high aim is like a ship without a rudder.
